Yale Alumni Chorus invited to Grahamstown National Arts Festival

In June and July of 2007, the Yale Alumni Chorus went on a 25 day tour to South Africa. During their trip, the choir visited Johannesburg, Game Parks, Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, and Cape Town. During the course of the tour, the Chorus shared the power of song onstage with over 750 South African musicians.

The Yale Alumni Chorus held five formal concerts in South Africa. They performed two concerts with the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra & Symphony Choir of Johannesburg, one at the Linder Auditorium and the other at The Guy Butler Theatre at the 1820 Settlers National Monument, National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The choir did a Choral Exchange with multiple choirs and a Marimba Group at Pretoria City Hall. The Yale Alumni Chorus also participated in a joint concert with 3 other choirs in a celebratory concert sponsored by General Motors, to benefit Ubuntu Educational Fund at Feather Market Centre in Port Elizabeth. The Yale Alumni Chorus' final concert was performed with Simon Estes and the Simon Estes Music High School choir to benefit the high school at Artscape Opera House in Cape Town. The day before, the choir participated in a singing exchange with the high school choir.

Following the Port Elizabeth Ubuntu benefit concert, the Chorus left behind some very substantial benefits in support of the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra's educational outreach program which teaches children in the township to play classical instruments. Drawing upon their own members, the Chorus made a magnificent donation of 110 instruments. The Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra now has enough instruments for every child who wants to join their program.

Given their commitment to a broad program of outreach in the communities they visit, The Yale Alumni Chorus found that South Africa proved to be a particularly exciting destination.

The Yale Alumni Chorus Donates Over $43,500, a Sound System and 110 Instruments to Towns in South Africa.

"South Africa is an extraordinary destination for choral music and the team at Classical Movements helped us create an unforgettable trip. The musical collaborations and the extra musical experiences were superb. The great beauty of the country, the wild life, the high standards of hotels, meals and venues and the warmth of the people were better than we could have wished for."
[JEFFREY DOUMA, MUSICAL DIRECTOR, YALE ALUMNI CHORUS; ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CHORAL MUSIC, YALE SCHOOL OF MUSIC]
