Cultural Exchange with Chinese Choristers enlightens the Chorus

Many things make China one of the most attractive travel destinations in the world. Its oriental mystery, ancient culture and opportunities for concerts and exchanges with Chinese people bring more and more choruses and orchestras to China. The San Francisco Girls Chorus has returned from a very successful tour to China with Classical Movements.

Susan McMane, Artistic Director of the San Francisco Girls Chorus, led 400 music teachers in a choral workshop. With an interpreter's help, Dr. McMane covered topics from chorister selection to chorus training. Top leaders from the Chinese Chorus Association participated in this event.

The Chorus presented a formal concert at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. A local audience of more than 1,300, including many children, enjoyed this wonderful concert. Members of the Beijing Spring Children's Choir met the San Francisco Girls Chorus before the concert. They enjoyed meeting each other and practiced a Chinese song which they sang together as a finale.

Prior to the Beijing segment of their tour, the San Francisco Girls Chorus was offered an invitation and featured at the World Vision International Choral Festival in Seoul, Korea.

While on tour with Classical Movements, the San Francisco Girls Chorus enjoyed excursions to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall and Sacred Way. The girls toured Summer Palace and enjoyed a boat ride on Kunming Lake. As part of their cultural exchange, the San Francisco Girls Chorus met Chinese families and learned to make different local food dishes. For a special treat, the girls were invited to meet with local Chinese teenage students at the Kong Fu School and had the unique experience to learn Chinese Kong Fu.

With the help of Classical Movements, the San Francisco Girls Chorus had a wonderfully successful tour to Beijing. For all of the girls, it was hard to say goodbye to a fantastic trip and a magnificent concert.
